She awoke while it was still dark, hot beneath the duvet with which he must have covered her as she slept, spent after their frenzied passion.

She felt bruised and tender, and grew hotter as she remembered how she had invited—no, incited—the violence of his lovemaking. The shame of it made her cheeks burn, and her body throbbed as it acknowledged the naked length of him still lying there beside her. She could hear the slow, steady rhythm of his breathing.

A shaft of light fell across his face from a brilliant moon, and she turned to study his profile, her breath catching in her lungs.

In sleep he looked so like Matthew, the wide mouth relaxed, that dark hair uncustomarily tousled. She wanted to reach out and touch that strong cheek, run her finger down the length of that uncompromising jaw made vulnerable by sleep. But the contact that had been so essential and inevitable when she had been driven by the force of her passion now seemed thoroughly taboo.

He had made love to her because he hadn’t been able to stop himself, caught—just as she had been—in the snare of their mutual desire. Nothing had changed. Not Lauren. Whatever he said, the fact that he had cheated on her with the other woman wouldn’t go away, even if, as he had professed tonight, he didn’t want her now. Nothing could alter that, or the way he had driven a wedge between Ralph and Chrissie.

Tears filled her eyes and she turned onto her back, staring through the darkness at the ceiling.

Why had it been her fate to fall in love with him? she agonised. And, thinking of Chrissie—where the hell was she? Why couldn’t she pick up a phone and ring, just to let her know that she was all right? True, it was early days yet, and she knew her sister would probably contact her eventually. But she needed to hear from her—and never so much as now, while she was going through this torture over Matthew! It was silly, she knew, but she was afraid. She just didn’t like the feeling that her sister, as well as her baby, had disappeared off the face of the earth.

She sat up with a start, suddenly wide awake—alert. There was something… Something that had been niggling at her all day.

It was that card at Chrissie’s. That postcard she had almost started to read before realising that it wasn’t addressed to her. It had been signed by Ralph. That much she had digested. But what was Ralph doing writing to Chrissie, when Chrissie was supposed to be with him?

Only now did the significance of that card intrude enough upon her thoughts for her to wonder why she hadn’t considered it before. But then she was so traumatised at the moment because of Matthew that half the time she didn’t know whether she was coming or going, or even what she was doing—let alone being conscious of anything anyone else was doing! But supposing Chrissie hadn’t…

She couldn’t even shape the thought that was forming in her brain.
